"We wanted to offer our customers application centric SLAs.
We selected Ipanema for its centralized shared management platform (SALSA) caters for any-to-any meshed flows as well as its tele-management capabilities (managing non-equipped sites) which are ideally suited for small
sites. With Ipanema, BAM can guarantee the level of application performance
through real SLAs."
Jérome Marquet, Head of Value Added Services, Network Business Unit

"Ipanema is providing us with technology that allows us
to offer our customers a unique and innovative service that
answers a real need,”
Jean-Noel Moneton, VP of Network Services Marketing

The Need for Application SLAs -
A new opportunity for Service Providers to increase market share, revenues and profits.

Brochure: Beyond Classes of Service

Telecom Operators
Ipanema Technologies, through its Autonomic Networking System and the dedicated SALSA platform, offers Telcos a scalable carrier class system with a dedicated service delivery framework called SALSA that transcends their actual IP VPN service, allows them to shift from a network SLA model to an Application SLA model and opens a way toward a new generation of high-value services centered around what matters most to the enterprise: the performance of their business-critical applications.
Find out about Ipanema-powered services opportunities:
Beyond Classes of Service
Telecom Service Providers have been offering their IP VPN clients Classes of Service (CoS) technology as a way to ensure the performance of business-critical applications. CoS technology can be very efficient for offering end-to-end guarantee for VoIP traffic. But for most business-critical application, CoS is performing poorly because of its inability to manage each flow individually. It is also cumbersome to manage both from the client and service provider standpoint.
Although CoS is a step in the right direction in providing more value from the IP VPN connectivity, it has missed its goal in term of value creation.
Ipanema Business Network Optimization includes everything that is missing in CoS both in terms of manageability and efficiency to provide a real answer to the application performance guarantee challenge.
An IP VPN service bundled with Ipanema Optimization is delivering a virtually unlimited number of Class of Services that are automatically mapped to individual users based on the resources requirements and criticality of application. The global and dynamic nature of Ipanema Optimization brings the ability to guarantee application performance at levels very close to 100% even in complex environments. The management costs of an IP VPN service fitted with Ipanema are dramatically reduced compared to one with traditional CoS. Many changes in terms of the traffic mix that typically require CoS tuning are handled automatically with Ipanema.
Ipanema transcends IP VPN services and finally delivers on the CoS promises.
Application Service Level Agreements
Enterprises are looking today at consistent end-to-end application performance guarantees. Central to many business applications, the WAN is a crucial component to achieve that goal. Service providers must therefore offer some guarantees in terms of the performance of applications running over the WAN.
Offering such guarantees is the role of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that are defined between the service providers and the enterprises. But typical network services SLAs are based on the performance of the link, not on the performance of the applications.
Ipanema provides a turnkey Application SLA definition, measurement and enforcement framework that includes a range of high-level indicators suitable for Application SLAs (AQS and MOS), the ability to automatically check for Application SLA validity (through the concept of “overactivity”), a set of dedicated SLA tools and reports and the ability to actively enforce the Application SLAs over the network thanks to a global and dynamic approach to traffic management based on application performance objectives.
Ipanema empower Application-centric SLAs that:
- Connect to the business of the enterprises through applications
- Clearly and precisely covers the different sections of the application delivery chain
- Are representative of the actual quality levels delivered to end-users
Ipanema is finally permitting Telcos to complete their revolution from a connectivity sales model toward an application delivery sales model.
A new Generation of High-value Services
Ipanema can be delivered to the enterprise through a variety of services. Some consulting services can be delivered first as part of application performance audits.
Managed services can be delivered along the Visibility, Optimization, Acceleration and Network Application Governance axis. Services can be organized into different levels.
For example, a basic Visibility service can be offered with the enterprise customer accessing a selection of Ipanema reporting and monitoring tools. Advanced Visibility services can include a helpdesk where the service provider reactively and/or proactively solves application performance issues.
Optimization can be delivered in many forms, the most basic one is when the customer has full control over the Optimization parameters. The Service Provider on the other hand can be delegated the configuration of the Optimization in exchange for Application SLAs.
Acceleration services can range from simple tactical or even global application Acceleration up to a service aimed at being started when the company decide to consolidate its datacenters.
The modular design of the SALSA platform is permitting an unlimited number of combinations of Ipanema functions. The open interfaces of the solution is an opportunity for innovative and differentiated services that can eventually be tightly coupled with transport layer technology (MPLS, Ethernet/VPLS) and/or application layer technology (server and clients).
Using Ipanema, Telcos will not only address the number one concern of their clients – consistent end-to-end application performance – but they will also boost revenues and margins, shift competition from pricing to value, improve customer loyalty and expand their market share.
